So bigger is definitely not always better, going bigger is not an appropriate way to design an efficient electric vehicle. but honestly we want this to look like & ride like a real skateboard too. Some people have the mentality of bigger is better, well in terms of top speed & torque you can easily have the fastest board flying up the steepest hill if your pumping insane amounts of voltage into an over-sized beast of a motor. What is the lightest motor that will offer the best performance at the best price? Some brush-less out-runner motors are cheap, some are expensive, some are huge, some are tiny. there are a huge range of motors to choose from that in most cases will work to some degree on your powered skateboard. Need Help choosing what motor to buy for your electric skateboard build?īuying a motor for use on your eboard can be a difficult task. Winding via hand VS winding with a computer controlled machine. Not Doing computer controlled motor balancing & tuning. Not using Quality enamelled copper winding. Not using high quality chemically resistant, high temperature epoxy resins. (Cheap motors get hot because of losses often due to low grade stator materials) High silicone percentage stator metal is more expensive & it reduces losses. Magnet retainer ring (often left out on cheap motors to save $1 or $2) Motor dimension tolerance (air gap size). Or some things simply get left out completely. Cheap = Rubbish.īasically when it comes to manufacturing motors the cheaper the factory tries to make the motor the less quality parts they use. I realised one thing after testing all these motors. Original Enertion R-SPEC 5065 245kv (same factory as Alien) I have tested all the popular motors from the hobby shop & also most of my competitors motors, or at least motors direct from the factories they use. Since publishing the original article about 12 months ago I have done much more motor testing than ever before!
